Run to Her

Guest Author interview: Lynn Kellan

Full disclosure — I wouldn’t be a published author if it wasn’t for Lynn Kellan. I met her at a romance writers conference (yes, we have our own conferences, full of wonderful supportive people) and she invited me to join the local chapter of RWA. Thanks to the group’s support, advice and encouragement, I was able to finish, sell and successfully market my book Dare to Love. Love you, Lynn!

Interview   |    Book Description   |   Author Bio

So, why are we here today?

Lynn Kellan has released her latest book, Run to Her, a contemporary romance with a bit more heat than her prior books.

run-to-her-cover-art-kellanGabriel Antonov is a mechanic who can fix anything. He’s the strong silent type, who keeps to himself. Leigh makes a habit of avoiding men like him. This becomes a problem when she finds herself marooned in his lakeside cabin for the weekend. Gabe’s surprising tenderness is difficult to resist and Leigh gives in to her physical and emotional desires.

Will the secrets they both hide destroy everything?

What inspired you to write this book?

My main characters came to life when I happened on a picture of Wladimir Klitschko (the heavyweight professional boxer) and Hayden Panettiere (a pretty blonde American actress). Wlad is a huge man and has a rugged, Slavic face. He looks like a real tough guy, but whenever he’s with Hayden (who is tiny and adorable), he looks content and at ease. They are such physical polar opposites, I thought it would be neat to write a story about a guy who looked like Wlad and who made his living with his hands (in this case, my hero is a mechanic). The heroine in RUN TO HER is an adorable blonde who happens to be an accountant. At first glance, they look like they have nothing in common…until one secret changes everything.

Initially, RUN TO HER started as an erotic contemporary. The first draft had a ton of sex scenes, which were fun to write, but the story included a secondary plot line that featured the ex-boyfriend and ex-girlfriend of the main characters. When I removed the secondary plot line, the story felt a lot stronger. In the final version, sex still plays an important role in the hero and heroine’s journey, as does their romance.

How is this book different and similar to your previous books?

In all honesty, this book contains a LOT more sex, which is why I’ve begged my parents not to read it!  The male hero in RUN TO HER curses a lot and has made plenty of mistakes, mostly with women. In fact, a one-night stand went terribly wrong and he hasn’t pursued another woman until he meets the heroine, Leigh.

I love stories that take place in rural, out of the way places. RUN TO HER takes place in the suburbs of Philadelphia and in a lakeside cabin nestled in the Pocono Mountains. In ANYTHING YOU ASK  the hero is a deaf man who agrees to a marriage of convenience to save his family farm in the middle of nowhere. CLEAR AS GLASS takes place near the state parks in northern Pennsylvania, where the hero owns a glassblowing factory.

What are you working on next?

RUN TO HER is the first book in The Brothers Series, featuring Gabe, the oldest brother in the Antonov family. I plan to release the next two books in 2017.

TURN TO HER focuses on Ivan, a brilliant graduate student with a past that threatens to dismantle his future. He can leave those bad memories behind once he graduates, but walking away from campus means he’ll also walk away from his gorgeous neighbor–a psychologist who is sharp enough to figure out why he hasn’t been with a woman for eighteen months.

Book 3, called PROMISED TO HER, is about Victor, a former Marine struggling to adapt to civilian life. His “normal” life skids off the road when his car is slammed into a ditch. He doesn’t know if the crash was an accident or attempted murder. Soon afterward, his restaurant burns down. Now he’s maimed, pissed off, and determined to discover the cause of these “accidents.” He agrees to work on a farm, hoping to find some answers, but winds up elbow-deep in lust for the pretty woman who owns the farm. If an “accident” hurts her, he’ll never be able to forgive himself.

Book Description: Run to Her

She avoids men like him. He needs a woman like her. But their secrets could change everything…

Gabriel Antonov is a mechanic who can fix anything, even a woman’s hesitance. His talents have earned him the well-deserved reputation as a player, but when a routine one-night stand goes wrong, he’s haunted by what he’s done. Nothing can free him from those depraved memories, until he meets Leigh Nelson.

Leigh avoids strong, silent types like Gabe, who is stronger and quieter than most. The only man she’s focused on is her father, who is suffering from a devastating health crisis. She’ll do anything to help him, but the stress is getting to her.

Gabe can’t outrun his gut-deep craving for her. Problem is, she’s running from him. When they’re marooned in his lakeside cabin, he might finally catch her…if he can admit why he’s falling apart without her.

Author Bio

Lynn Kellan believes men and women aren’t that different – we both want to be with someone who will empty the dishwasher. To test her theory, she fell in love with bad boys, burly athletes, battle-hardened Marines…and married a chemist who is manly enough to tackle every household chore.

Lynn writes sexy contemporary romance about strong men who have a weakness for smart women. She’s won numerous writing contests and served two terms as President of her local Romance Writers of America chapter, but she feels a true sense of accomplishment whenever she doesn’t embarrass her teenaged kids – which isn’t often.

A hot Irish rugby star…what an intriguing hero

Sexy. Passionate. Fierce.

That’s how romance author Cd Brennan describes Padraig O’Neale, the hero in her latest novel In Touch. Released September 1, 2015 by Amazon Digital, In Touch introduces us to the rough and tumble world of professional rugby.

I personally know bupkis about rugby–other than it uses an odd looking football-ish thing and involves something called a scrum–but after reading Brennan’s book blurb, I’m more than willing to learn.

Let me know what you think…

In Touch book coverIrish rugby star, Padraig O’Neale, has fecked up his life and is one angry man. When caught using a banned substance for his back pain, Padraig is excused from both his provincial club and the Irish International team. Right before World Cup selection.

Out of choices, his agent convinces Padraig to play for a small American club in Michigan. Just until things settle down. But when Coach asks the team physical therapist, Gillian Sommersby, to help the newest Blues player with his issues, Padraig finds himself trying every wacky treatment out there from stinky salves to music to yoga.

Like her therapies, the therapist herself is a bit…odd. The cute college grad in Converse and glasses doesn’t seem all that impressed with Padraig’s celebrity status, nor gives a shite about his excuses. As it turns out, she might be exactly what he needs…

Available in print or for e-readers.

And because I never buy a book without first rifling through the pages, here’s a tantalizing tidbit to tempt you:

Gillian unzipped her bag where she’d placed it on the table and grabbed a small jar of ointment. “I’ll use one of my special treatments on—”

“I’m not interested.” Padraig took a step back.

“I can show you some exercises specifically for the lower back, and if you apply this cream twice a day, you’ll notice a change within a week.”

His fist clenched at his side. “I told you I’m not interested in your help. I have a routine that my physio back home gave me. That’s working.”

“You’re not in pain?”

He crossed his arms over his chest. “Nope.”

But she could tell he was lying by the way his eyes had darted to the corner of the room and back before he’d answered. The way they shone, all glassy. The way he walked with stiffness in his step. She wouldn’t take no for an answer. Not anymore.

“Take your shirt off, please, and lie on the table with your head at the far side. I’m sure you are familiar with massage. Head goes down in the center.”

Padraig was staring at her as if she’d grown two heads. Maybe she had a ketchup stain on her tank top. She held the shirt out but saw nothing. Huh.

At his almost imperceptible nod, her courage grew. Just like any client. “Lie here on your stomach.”

He did as instructed and settled his head onto his overlapped hands. She lifted his hips to lower his track pants so they rode low on his bum. Sweet mercy. His ass was divine. Rounder and juicier than a summer cantaloupe.

But she was a professional, and he, a client. And a jock. A deep breath in and out. Gillian uncapped the jar and rubbed her palms with the ointment.

“What the hell is that smell?”

“None of your worry. It works really well. Hasn’t anyone told you the smellier the concoction, the better the results?”

“Just like Rory. You are all mad,” came muffled through the table.

“Crazy knows crazy. Now shush.”

She started at his lower lumbar and moved her hands in sweeping motions up his back, around his side, under his armpits, and finally over his shoulders. She began again at his lower back and kneaded and rolled along his spine, then outward, circling her palms over knotted muscles. Hitching his pants lower, she delved under his boxer band, massaging the top of his bum, smoothing the muscle out and away from his spine.

As normally happened once she was in rhythm, the time ticked by. After a few repetitions along his torso, she stopped to check on him.

He appeared to be asleep. The endorphins released by the massage weighted him to the table, as happened with most of her clients when they fell into a peaceful lethargy. So quiet, she couldn’t hear him breathe. Wide back, broad shoulders, dark, tousled hair. A man any woman would want. Except for Gillian. He was no Lloyd Dobler.

She should really be getting him up and out the door so he could catch his lift from Del, but she couldn’t get herself to do it. So she took a seat on one of the chairs along the wall. Leaning her elbow on her knee and resting her jaw in her hand, she watched him sleep. A dark, manly brow that had finally relaxed. Black, thick lashes. Strong nose and a top lip that came to a defined point.

He was gorgeous, really.

She was so mesmerized that when his eyes blinked open, she screamed. Just like in a horror movie when the corpse comes to life. She had scrambled halfway up her chair when he let out a laugh.

Her hand over her racing heart, she didn’t see the humor, but then, he’d only opened his eyes, which didn’t normally elicit such a dramatic response. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw him move, first to sitting where he waited a few beats, then onto his feet.

As he was pulling his shirt over his head, Del barged through the door. “Everything all right here?”

In His Corner coverart

Love is “In His Corner”

In His Corner coverartVina Arno loves to write, and she is not constrained by genre. This month, her first novel In His Corner, was released by Lyrical Press, an imprint of Kensington Publishing Corp. It’s a contemporary romance featuring a boxer named the Juggernaut, and an emergency room doctor.

Vina has also worked as a journalist and written an historical novel featuring Douglas MacArthur. She was kind enough to get in the ring with me and answer a few hard-hitting questions (just kidding…we’re all friends here.)

Who’s your favorite character in the book?

Both the hero, Tommy Raines, and the heroine, Siena Carr. He’s an Olympic gold-medalist boxer known as the Juggernaut and she’s an ER doctor. They’re opposites. She was born into money, while he comes from a blue-collar family. She’s an Ivy League graduate; he’s a college dropout.  She heals people, while he knocks them out.

Is your personality more like your hero or heroine?

I’m nothing like my characters. The only thing I share with Siena is my love for Italy. In the book, her parents named her after the Italian city. It’s no coincidence that Siena is my favorite Italian city. I started writing this book one week after returning from Tuscany.

What’s your favorite scene and why?

My favorite is the first chapter, which is set inside an ER—a very unlikely place for romance. The Juggernaut goes there for stitches and Siena is the attending physician who treats him.  They have a singular encounter that leads to a hot but rocky relationship.

What did you get stuck on when writing this book?

I’m very lucky that I didn’t get stuck at all. Writing this romance book was a “treat” for me after spending 10 years researching, writing, and rewriting a historical novel about Douglas MacArthur, the iconic World War II general. I started writing In His Corner two months after I finished rewriting the MacArthur novel.

What’s next?

My literary agent, Paula Munier, is shopping my MacArthur novel to editors. I’m also writing another romance story.

Due for release in July, this Paranormal Historical Romance is available through Lyrical Press/Kensington Publishing.

When Demons threaten Regency London, only a Lady can stop them.

Lillian Dellacourt is beautiful, refined and absolutely lethal. She’s also the most feared and merciless demon hunter in The Company. She’s come a long way from the penniless seamstress’s daughter sold to the highest bidder, and it wasn’t by trusting a man, let alone an exiled Marquis with more on his mind than slaying the hellspawn . . .

For Dorian Lambert, Marquis de Montalembert, being sent to keep track of Lillian is no mean task. He’s wanted the fiery vixen since he first heard of her five years ago. But wooing the lady while fighting the demon uprising is no easy feat, especially when the lady’s tongue is as sharp as the Japanese sai blades she favors for eviscerating the spawn of hell.

These two will have to learn to trust each other fast, because the demon master is back, and he’s planning to turn Edinburgh into a living hell…

Twice in a Blue Moon cover art

Mastering romance in multiple genres

Twice in a Blue Moon cover artCate Masters has released her latest novella, Twice In A Blue Moon this month.

Published by Kensington Publishing’s Lyrical Press this contemporary romance features Melanie Michaels, a woman desperate to bury the grief she’s felt upon the death of her first love. She embraces the risky demands of a reality show, where her extreme stunts leave her teetering on the edge of danger. That’s exactly where she wants to be—until she arranges for her crew to traverse the Swedish Lapland in the dead of winter. It’s the one place she shouldn’t go, on the one day she should avoid—her would-be wedding anniversary.

Instead of romantic nights spent in the Ice Hotel or under the Northern Lights, Melanie is stuck with Joe “Buck” Wright, a snarky loner tour guide who loves his sled dogs and nothing and no one else. But Buck is also trying to numb a painful past. Can two people skilled at pushing others away find warmth at the edge of the Arctic?

Cate’s been kind enough to answer my favorite blog questions, so without further ado…

Welcome Cate! So tell us, who’s your favorite character in the book?

Thanks so much for having me as a guest, Alleigh! Hmm, favorites are tough to choose, but I’d have to say Buck, the hero. He’s a bit of a loner (kind of like a writer, lol), loves animals and is ruggedly handsome (just like Richard Castle, because Nathan Fillion was in my head as the hero).

Is your personality more like your hero or heroine?

Because the heroine performs extreme sports and I’m too fearful of anything remotely resembling those, I’d have to say the hero. Again, because of his love of animals and sometimes hermitlike existence lol.

What’s your favorite scene and why?

There are so many! I fell in love with this setting, and sharing a night beneath the northern lights is so romantic. Toward the end, there’s a scene where the hero and heroine bare their souls to one another, and she finally finds closure about her fiancée’s death, with the hero’s help.

What did you get stuck on when writing this book?

I didn’t necessarily get stuck, but I had to do tons of research for this story, about extreme sports, the Swedish Lapland, the Sami people, dog sledding, and the Icehotel, a fantastic place made entirely of snow and ice that melts away each spring.

What’s next?

On May 15, Kensington will release The Griffin’s Secret, my urban fantasy/retold fairy tale of magic and rock and roll:

Jackson Grant had it all—the girl he loved, his Harley, and his guitar. Until a tragic accident stole it all away. Now, more than scars and a tattoo remain. Jackson has a secret. Cursed by his dead girlfriend’s mother, he can never fall in love again or his beloved will die. With his heart on lockdown, he keeps to himself—until a roadie gig with Malcontent, the world’s most popular band, entwines his fate with sweet, wounded Layla’s…

Music is what Layla lives for. She has no choice. She’s bound by magic to serve Malcontent, cursed to propel them to stardom with her musical powers. Then Jackson appears and gives her hope that he’s the hero who will save her. A reluctant hero, yet one she can’t resist. But freedom will come at price—and who will pay…?

Thanks again for having me on your blog today!

I love me some shape shifters

Daisy Banks, a fellow Lyrical author, has published the second in her three-book series called “Timeless.” I invited her to share information about her latest work.

Thank you so much for hosting me, Alleigh, and helping me celebrate the release of my new book To Eternity.

This book follows Magnus and Sian, whom you may have met in my first book, Timeless.  I hope those of you meeting them for the first time in To Eternity will be inspired to read my first book to learn more about their past .

I am presently in the process of writing Out of Time, Book Three in the series and hope to complete it this year.

Daisy Banks cover To EternityTo Eternity-wild beneath the moon- Book Two in the Timeless Series.

Blurb

For four centuries Magnus has lived according to the dictates of the moon, his heart isolated by the domination of his wolf nature. Now fate has brought the beautiful, independent Sian to his house at Darnwell and their irresistible attraction has exploded into a white-hot passion. Yet she is not wolf, and the time has come for her to embrace the change. But once she completes the ritual and claims her place next to Magnus, the rivals will appear on the horizon…

Excerpt

One element in both Timeless and To Eternity that I enjoyed writing about was Magnus and Sian’s magnificent house. Their interest in antiques and architecture, the work they share in planning restoration, and the walled garden interested me a great deal.

I hope you enjoy this short excerpt:

Each dawn, as the shoot-day approached, he dwelt on the need to find another place to spend his time during the days when the whole camera team, the musicians, dancers, sound crew, and all the many others she’d explained would be necessary for the film, came to the house. The prospect of so many disturbed his equilibrium. He’d not invited so many strangers into his home for more years than he cared to think about. Though he did his best to disguise his apprehension, without a doubt, Sian knew.

“Magnus, it will be fine. You can come to watch the filming if you want. Think of the event as if it were a step back through your vacation pictures. I promise the costumes will bring back happy memories.”

He shook his head. “Thank you for the thought, but no, I’d rather not. Perhaps I’ll spend the day researching decoration for the renovation of the conservatory.”

“If you’re sure. I’ll keep the crew to the schedule. Everyone will be out of the house and off the grounds by six-thirty, no later, I promise. That way we can have dinner and the evening together.” She offered him a smile filled with confidence.

“Wonderful, I’ll look forward to dining with you.”

“Hmm…” She stared at the letter she’d opened. “Here’s some information you might want to look at, too.”

He accepted the papers. “Green Girls?”

“Yes, in answer to my advert regarding the walled garden. It won’t put itself to rights, and as much as I enjoy looking at it, I don’t think we’ll resurrect it alone. In my opinion, we need specialist help. I like the look of this group.”

He assessed the business card, professional enough to be encouraging. Opening the sales literature, he gave it a quick glance. “Every employee is a descendant of a Land Army girl?”

“Yes, it’s their advertising gimmick. They all had relatives in the Land Army in the war. You must know of the Land Army.”

He nodded. A wave of helpless adoration hit him at this new example of her happy knack of finding his weak spots. If she’d been a tigress in another life, he’d not be surprised, because Sian sank her claws into him with loving relish, tearing into his open heart. “Yes, I have recollections of the Land Army, my dear. I was quite active during wartime. It was easier.”

Thanks for reading,

Daisy Banks

Double Cross

I’m excited to announce Juliette Cross’ cover reveal for books 2 and 3 in The Vessel Trilogy. This series is an urban fantasy/paranormal romance, published by Samhain Publishing. They won’t be released until April/July 2015, but the covers are worth admiring. The first book, Forged in Fire is currently available.

SISSEALED IN SIN – Book 2 (April 2015)

Sin can look an awful lot like heaven.

One demon prince may be festering in the bowels of the soul eater Cocytus, but Genevieve’s troubles are far from over. Prince Bamal, demon lord of New York City, still wants her. But this time, he wants her alive, to control her inherent power as a Vessel of Light.

With Jude Delacroix off searching for the prophecy, Thomas—a guardian angel with sea-green eyes and an aura of winter woods—steps into the gap, offering her the power to protect herself.

Yet she hesitates, for the transfer of that power comes through a kiss. While Gen’s love for Jude is true, Thomas stirs a desire where there should be none. Thomas also knows Jude’s darkest secret and plans to use it, if necessary, to win Gen for his own.

While her Vessel power grows and more demon spawn creep from every dark corner of the world, one thing is certain—the Great War between the angels and demons is quickly approaching. And Gen is in a race against time to awaken her full power before the storm breaks.

Warning: Contains a demon hunter with dark secrets, a sexy angel with ulterior motives, and demonic creatures running amok

BIBBOUND IN BLACK – Book 3 (July 2015)

In the belly of the beast, strategy is useless.

Genevieve Drake is on a dangerous mission to find the soul collector, Lethe, and enter the deepest, darkest level of the underworld. No one has ever returned alive from the belly of a soul collector, but she will let nothing stop her from going after the precious treasure Lethe stole from her.

As she is tested against demon spawn and foul creatures of the underworld, each triumph strengthens her Vessel power—and drags her closer to a breaking point that could forever doom her to the abyss.

Meanwhile, with the full prophecy hurtling toward completion, the Dominus Daemonum strategize for the day Gen will battle Prince Bamal’s Vessel to the death, when the Great War between heaven and hell will begin.

But Bamal has a secret weapon. When he reveals it—and Thomas reveals his own hidden agenda—Gen may not have the strength to resist the temptation to fall into darkness, forsaking the fate of the world for her broken heart.

Warning: Contains malicious demons, sinister spawn, and a vengeful heroine with plans to send them all back to burning hell.

From the moment she read JANE EYRE as a teenager, she fell in love with the Gothic romance—brooding characters, mysterious settings, persevering heroines, and dark, sexy heroes. Even then, she not only longed to read more novels set in Gothic worlds, she wanted to create her own.

Clear as Glass

Clear as Glass bookcoverThis week we are joined by Lynn Kellan, author of “Clear as Glass.” Her first full-length novel, out October 22, 2014, was the winner of five Romance Writers of America chapter contests.

Poised to become her overbearing father’s right-hand man, Jaye Davis is tired of being a faceless drone, writing software. She’d rather help real people—like the family who owns a struggling glassblowing factory in the Appalachian Mountains. While she’s there, she might figure out how to squash the secrets gnawing at her.

Mitchell Blake and his father keep butting heads about expanding Blake Glassware, and now Mitch has to deal with his father’s consultant, Jaye. Arguing with this doe-eyed woman makes one thing perfectly clear: she has the power to shatter his safe, lonely life.

Lynn has agreed to answer a series of random questions, helping us get Behind the Pages of her most recent work.

So Lynn, who is your favorite character in the book?

My favorite character in Clear as Glass is Jaye Davis. She’s funny, smart, and won’t back down when Mitchell Blake initially tries to convince her Blake Glassware doesn’t need her help. She’s the first one who sees that she and Mitch aren’t that different – he is stifled by an overbearing father, just like she is. This private kinship is the first thread that binds them together.
Is your personality more like your hero, Mitchell Blake, or the heroine, Jaye Davis?
There is a lot of me in Jaye whenever she cracks a joke or has a visceral reaction to an emotional scene. I must admit that I fell in love with Mitch when I wrote the book, so being part of the heroine was a fun way to participate in the story. (Don’t tell my husband.)
What is your favorite scene?
The hot tub scene toward the end of the book. I don’t want to give too much away, but there is a bear wandering around in the back yard while Mitch and Jaye argue in the hot tub. When I discussed this scene with my critique group, much hilarity ensued because everyone wanted to know what the bear was doing! We still refer to that discussion as the “Where’s the bear?” chat.
Where did you get stuck when writing this book?
Gosh, there were so many places. I always get stuck. Heck, I got stuck right now when I was trying to think of an answer to this question! However, I had the most difficulty tying up all the subplots at the end of the book. The final chapter, in particular, gave me panic attacks. I rewrote the last scene a number of times, but all that angst crafted a satisfying ending.
What’s up next?
Currently, I’m finishing a three-book erotic series written under a different pen name. I hope to finish that project at the end of 2014 and then I’ll polish my next contemporary romance to release in 2015. The book is already written, and it’s titled The Perfect Flaw.
